March's Elle Decor was a bit hit or miss for me. There were a few rooms I fell in love with; and others that just weren't hitting the right note. One that did catch my eye, was artist Anne Becker's Alphabet City bedroom. I'm not a huge fan of all of the styling choices here...I want a bedroom to look plush and comforting, and the bed and bench in here look way too rigid. And as I've mentioned before, I am really, really hitting my suzani threshold.
But what I do like about this room is that Becker's free spirit vibe comes through loud and clear. I mean, it takes some serious chutzpah to put wood shutters in a Manhattan apartment. And while some people may think it's tacky and over the top, Becker gets to wake up in a jewel box every morning.
It's so easy to get caught up in "the rules" but ultimately it comes down to what makes you happy. I wish we could all be this gutsy!

UPDATE: So, I sign into my reader to see the Peak of Chic put up this exact quote today. Am I absorbing design blogs in my subconscious now?? Anyway, check out Jennifer Boles post today on this meme, and let's all applaud good taste, bad taste and your taste wherever it may fall.
