During February's snowpocalypse, it's fair to say that I spent a lot of time with the "on demand" button on my remote, looking for any and every little piece of cinematic escapism I could find. Out of all the movies I watched that week, nothing captured my imagination better than the Mira Nair's 2004 remake of Vanity Fair -- while the movie is not the greatest film ever made and deviates pretty far from Thackeray's original storyline, all I could think was... Holy Set Design!
Think expansive british estates, elaborate costumes and a breath-taking imagining of the famed Vauxhall Gardens. My favorite scenes were the brief glimpses of India and it's influence on English culture during the Regency period. I've been inspired ever since with the thought of buttoned-up and formal English interiors spiced up with pops of citrus and electric colors of India. My digital inspiration board below:
