Artist Spotlight: Jenny Holzer

(Bordeaux, 2001)

Take another look. These images weren't photoshopped, the text was literally projected onto these historic sites and landscapes, part of an ongoing "Projections" series from artist Jenny Holzer.

I first discovered Holzer when she projected her Redaction series on the GWU campus where I went to school -- although it wasn't my favorite work, it sparked an ongoing interest that I try to brush up on from time to time. It combines three of my favorite things: poetry/word-based art, historic architecture and black and white photography.

Holzer has actually visited DC on a few occasions, but has never projected on any monuments to my knowledge. Unfortunately, my blogging software decided not to cooperate with me today and I'm unable to post those pictures tonight. I plan to update the post, as soon as it's working again -- I just couldn't wait to share! If you're particularly impatient, you can view "For the Capitol," quotes from John F. Kennedy and Teddy Roosevelt projected over the Potomac, here.
