New Beginnings
This week, news broke that one of my favorite shelter mags, Domino, is closing. It’s become painfully obvious that these are tough times to be working in print, let alone at a magazine devoted to home design – which relies on a thriving housing market for advertising.
However, I’m feeling optimistic about the future of this genre. I’m happy to have discovered many amazing design blogs popping up to fill the void, and perhaps we’ll see more of the creative minds at Domino join the fray (katy elliott is one staff standout that comes to mind). Despite the bleak economic outlook, and maybe because of it, I’m convinced the comforts of home will continue to be a centerpiece of American life.
So, what’s next? I predict a backlash against flash, a fresher, unfussy take on the classics and a focus on craftsmanship and quality. No matter what, uncertain times are often the most exciting and I’m looking forward to sharing and recording my thoughts here on Department of the Interior.
